Life on the Nile: Tanya's luxury river cruise through ancient Egypt

Some destinations live up to the stories. A rare few surpass them entirely. For our Senior Consultant Tanya Cross, who has explored 55 countries over more than 23 years in travel, Egypt was one of those rare few. Tanya recently returned from the Luxury Gold and Uniworld 10-day Nile River Cruise itinerary. She came home with the kind of stories that remind us exactly why we do what we do.

"Egypt has truly swept me off my feet, exceeding all expectations," she told us from the road. "Every day brings another highlight, better than the last."

Beginning in Cairo

Tanya's journey began in Cairo, a city of almost 25 million people. Its sights, sounds and smells tell you straight away that you've arrived somewhere truly different. From there, the group travelled to Giza to stand before the ancient pyramids. Thousands of years later, the question of exactly how they were built still captures the imagination. A visit to the must-see Grand Egyptian Museum followed, bringing the story of this ancient civilisation into vivid focus before the journey south began.

Life on the Nile aboard the SS Sphinx

From Cairo, Tanya flew to Luxor to board Uniworld's SS Sphinx, her home for the next seven nights. This is where Egypt truly opened up. Gliding along the Nile, the ship was both a place of calm and a front-row seat to the country's village life and culture. Some of Egypt's most spectacular temples and the legendary Valley of the Kings were waiting along the way.

"Our life on the Nile onboard the SS Sphinx has been the most incredible experience," Tanya said, "bringing the perfect blend of Egyptian culture and village life with the mind-blowing ancient Egyptian history."

This is a big part of why we believe a luxury river cruise is the best way to experience Egypt. You don't pack and unpack between hotels. Instead, you settle into one beautiful ship and the great sites come to you. Each evening you return to comfort, good food and the quiet of the river, ready for whatever the next day reveals.

Sunrise at the temples

Temperatures reached 41 degrees, so the group planned each day around the heat and the crowds. That meant early access to the temples and, as Tanya describes it, "so many magical sunrise moments — standing in awe as thousands of years of history unfolded before us."

This kind of pacing is where a well-designed itinerary makes all the difference. You arrive at an ancient temple in the soft light of early morning, before the heat builds and the crowds arrive. A sightseeing stop becomes a memory you'll carry for years.

Why Tanya will be back

Some journeys tick a destination off the list. Others change the way you see the world. For Tanya, Egypt was firmly the latter.

"Egypt is a life-altering destination," she said. "Each day reveals another story, an incredible temple or another moment leaving you captivated for the next. For this reason, I know I will be back!"

Our consultants travel so they can bring this first-hand knowledge back to Ferrymead and share it with you. It covers how a journey feels, which moments matter most, and how to shape the days so you experience them at their best. If Egypt has been quietly calling you, Tanya would love to share her stories over a coffee. Let's meet and start planning your own journey along the Nile together.
