Melissa's Family Road Trip Through Croatia

The Final Chapter of Our Croatian Adventure: 8 Day Road Trip

The last leg of our Croatian journey was an unforgettable 8 day road trip a perfect way to explore the diverse beauty this country (and a little beyond) has to offer. We picked up our rental car in Dubrovnik, and a quick note for fellow Kiwi travellers: New Zealand passports usually require an International Driver’s Permit to drive in most European countries, including Croatia.

First Stop: The Stunning Makarska Riviera

Heading north from Dubrovnik, our first destination was the breathtaking Makarska Riviera a stretch of idyllic coastal towns nestled between the mountains and the Adriatic Sea. This area is a dream: charming fishing villages, larger resort towns, pristine beaches, and some of the freshest seafood we've ever tasted. Vineyards dot the landscape, and every turn in the road reveals another postcard worthy view.

Sibenik: A Historical Gem

From Makarska, we made our way to Šibenik, a city brimming with history and character. The Old Town is built on terraces, with countless steps winding through cobbled alleys and narrow streets. Šibenik is guarded by three ancient fortresses perched above the town, each offering sweeping views.

One of the highlights of our time here was a visit to Krka National Park. We chose the small boat option to get to the waterfalls — a scenic and peaceful way to arrive. The walk around the falls is about 2km, but we decided to walk the full 4km back along the river, and it was absolutely beautiful. Šibenik is steeped in history and charm; it's a place you could easily spend days just exploring.

Crossing into Bosnia: A Night in Mostar

Next, we crossed the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina for a night in the fascinating city of Mostar. The border crossing itself was straightforward but time-consuming allow at least an hour each way for customs processing.

Mostar is known for the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge), a reconstructed medieval arched bridge that spans the emerald green Neretva River. The surrounding alleys are alive with market stalls, shops, and traditional Bosnian cafés. Don’t miss the climb up the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque minaret the views from the top are spectacular.

Top tip for Mostar: wear good walking shoes! The cobblestones are incredibly slippery, especially on the bridge, so take care when walking around.

One of the most sobering parts of our visit was seeing the bullet holes still visible in many buildings a haunting reminder of the war that devastated the region well into the 1990s. It was a powerful and moving experience.

Final Stop: Cavtat & Farewell Sunset

After a memorable 24 hours in Mostar, we made the 160km journey back to Cavtat, a charming coastal town near Dubrovnik airport. We spent our final evening watching the sun set over the Adriatic the perfect way to end our adventure.
